At Burke Middle College 16-17 year old students have opted to leave the familiar and challenge themselves with higher academic standards as they infuse their studies with college rigor. For many this is a first step for them and their families to a better socio-economic future, most notably for our Hispanic and Hmong students. For all, this is their first exposure to the demands of an in-depth content and fast-paced presentation. They have all done well in a traditional setting and need to find a new rhythm for their academic practices. They must learn to balance the rigors of academics with jobs, family and personal time. We have a lounge for students to spend their down time between classes, but need interesting, mentally stimulating, quick access and execution activities to revitalize their vigor for the next phase of the day. The lounge is a point of community for the middle college students to associate with others facing similar challenges. They will share their coping methods and find support both in study groups and friendships. The students have worked hard to get here, not exactly knowing what they are getting into. As they develop strategies to find the balance they need in their busy lives, they will find success here and in their subsequent educational pursuits and careers.
