At our school, we have four site based mental health clinicians providing free services for students and families. The furniture and materials I am requesting, will give students a comfortable environment to work with their clinicians and focus on healing from trauma. Our school and community lacks the resources to have a comfortable and well equipped space for therapy. The rooms are also used by teachers and the social worker (me) to offer children a place to talk and calm down if needed during the school day. Five years ago, I developed a center for family support and on-site therapy. There are two rooms set aside for this. Providing the services onsite for free allows students and families to receive therapy in safe and comfortable setting. All of our families are extremely hard-working, many are recent immigrants, and most caregivers have several jobs just to survive. There are significant barriers for families to bring their children to therapy off site. Some of these barriers include: time in the day, work constraints, cost, location, availability of therapists, and trusting an off-site provider. Services are provided on the school site, in a stress free and calming environment. The organizations providing therapists have long standing relationships with the school. The materials I am requesting will allow for a multi-sensory approach to healing. Thank you for supporting our community, it wouldn't be possible without you!
