For incoming Kindergarteners, it is important to create a home like space in the classroom and provide as many opportunities for movement as possible. Even as a teacher it is hard to stay in one spot for the entire school day. I can't imagine how a 5 or 6 years-old can do it! Flexible seating increases student engagement and also gives a comfortable, welcoming feel. During my student teaching experience, I was introduced to the world of "flexible seating", which I believe changed the game in learning. I quickly noticed that some students did not enjoy traditional desks. Some preferred to stand, others liked to sit on a bean bag, others liked to wiggle on a wobbled chair, some preferred a particular texture, and others liked to bounce. By providing students with flexible seating options, it provides a positive way to encourage independence and successful work. These flexible seating items will greatly benefit my incoming Kindergarteners by helping provide more opportunity for movement throughout the day. Each student will be unique, but each student can use his or her body as a tool for learning!
