By being able to purchase a class set of "Wonder", I will be able to give my students the opportunity to shift their perspective, learn and gain empathy, and encounter the power of kindness. Not only will we be reading the book, but we will be doing weekly projects surrounding the books theme throughout the school year. In this day and age when bullying has become so prevalent in schools, I would like my students to understand that we are all different and that if we can see the world through others eyes, it will help us exhibit kindness and learn acceptance and tolerance. Throughout the book study, we will be deeply discussing self awareness, "putting oneself in another person's shoes", and being able to control ones own emotional reactions. As a teacher, I have learned that not only are we the educator, but we are also in a way that one person they can come to for help. At the end of the book, our classroom will be conducting an Empathy Project which will involve the students and their families. I will also be taking my students to the movies since the movie is coming out in November 2017 to compare/contrast the movie and book and to get a different perspective.
