The books in this project will broaden my students' understanding of the world. Through these stories, they will find commonalities with people they see as different and will come away with empathy for the experience of another person. Students who have had a hard time seeing themselves represented in literature will surely see a reflection in these books. They will read about topics such as peer pressure, bullying and hate speech, dealing with loss, coping with a parent's depression, poverty, and fitting in without compromising your identity. Some characters are Muslim-Americans, refugees, and immigrants, while others are American kids dealing with everyday struggles. Your contribution will help all kids to feel included and valued. Providing choice in reading is vital, and the options must be relevant. Most of the titles left in our book room were published before 1985, so you can imagine the lack of intrigue and relevance they offer today's teens.
