Flexible Seating For Flexible Learning! My students need four stability balls and three sit/stand desks. If you've walked into a coffee shop lately or even a new business office, environments have changed. Cubicles and desks have been traded out for bean bags, standing desks, and even treadmills. Adults have figured out that choice empowers creativity and comfortable learning environments are more productive. Research has proven that active bodies promote engaged minds. Kids already know what adults have just figured out. They run around, like to get up and move, and actively participate in hands on learning. I have one class of 28 students and also team teach with another teacher so that I teach a second section of social studies to another class of 28 students. I notice that many of my students need to be active and enjoy sitting and standing in different areas of the room. I had one student who used a stability ball last year and it gave her the opportunity to build stamina and focus while building core muscles. Many other students wanted to try this ball too, but I didn't have any. We need four stability balls and three sit/stand desks to give my students more choices in learning space, help them to focus longer, and promote better health and exercise. It makes sense that if our learning is flexible and differentiated our seating should be too!
