My classes did a test run of hatching chickens last year. Everything we used was borrowed and had to be given back. The test was a success and students loved learning how to care for our chickens! Students will learn how to incubate (incubator, hygrometer) and care for eggs, baby chicks (heat lamp, hygrometer, nutritional supplement) and chickens (waterer and feeder). I have built a small chicken coop in our courtyard so we will be able to keep the chicks year-round (until each summer when I find homes for them)! My students will learn responsibility and complete daily and weekly chores and will also get to experience the hens laying eggs by the second half of the year! With eggs, we will learn how to use them in cooking and baking and may even partner with the business teacher to market selling some of the eggs! The proceeds would go back into feeding and caring for our flock! One of the best experiences of having chickens last year was when students had a rough day, needed a brain break, or needed some motivation, they came to see/hold the chicks. I hope to bring that joy and relaxation back again this year with more chicks/chickens!
