During our first reading discussion of the year I discuss with my students the kinds of places people select to read in when reading for pleasure. I'd bet that not many people read a book sitting up at their desk or table in a chair when reading for pleasure outside of school or work. Readers tend to enjoy comfortable spots where they can get lost in their books. These cozy reading chairs will give my students the space and place they need to read comfortably throughout our reading time. These spots will help motivate students to transition into their reading time, as students will be thankful for a change in seating. With an 8 hour school day, students need to have opportunities to be out of their desk chairs. Students will enjoy selecting a place around the room in one of these comfy chairs to read. Giving students their own individualized place to read also cuts down on disruptive behaviors and allows for classmates to stay focused on their text. My hope is that you agree that giving students a comfortable place to enjoy their reading will promote good reader habits and will inspire students to focus on their books. Let's allow students to be readers and enjoy a comfortable spot!
