As a new educator I am hoping to grow our classroom library to include wider range of topics and text genres. Having a more diverse library ensures that students are better able to connect with literacy which is personally relevant to their lives. A larger classroom library also encourages students to understand how different texts are used for certain purposes and translate this knowledge into their use of literacy. Exposure to a range of literature will supports students' overall literacy achievement. By having a classroom library full of books (The Rainbow Fish, What do you do with a Tail Like This? and Wemberly Worried) which students want to read they will develop a love for reading that extends far beyond their year in first grade.
