Fact fluency provides kids with the pertinent building blocks needed to be successful in mathematics. Without this fluency, it makes future learning of mathematical concepts difficult and slows down learning. In second grade my students are expected to add and subtract numbers to 1,000, solving complex word problems involving money, mass, measurement, volume and time. They even begin multiplication and division. Yet many of my students come to second grade unable to add basic numbers like 2+3=5 without counting on their fingers. I want their basic facts to become automatic. Math in our classroom is taught in small groups using a workshop model. One of the workplaces we have is fact fluency. This gives the students an opportunity to practice their facts daily. It would be really beneficial for the class if we had tablets and headphones for the students to use during this time. This would allow the students to be able to use Reflex math (a research based fact fluency program), Symphony math and other math fact applications to help achieve fact fluency. It is my hope that my ambitious second graders will obtain fact fluency leading to greater confidence and success in mathematics in the future.
