Aquaponics gardening is a hands on way to increase student engagement in a very important field. The integration of the systems as a model to deliver instruction allows teachers to incorporate many cross-curricular standards across grade levels. In our school, we plan to use the systems to teach students in grades 3-5 about habitats, ecosystems, biodiversity, sustainability, water quality, and farming for the future. Students will also explore engineering and technology as they build and design the systems and plan for fish and plants to be added. If the students in grades 3-5 are lucky enough to have these indoor gardening systems brought to our school, it will literally bring ALL of their learning to life! Having multiple systems in the lab will allow students to adjust the lighting and nutrients in different tanks to see how that affects the growth of the plants. Younger students will learn to collect data on the water quality and use it to maintain pH and appropriate bacteria levels. The potential for a year round gardening club is also in the works. That way, in Wisconsin when we are covered in snow outside, students will be safe indoors learning away!!
