Do you remember your favorite book growing up? I had quite a few, but the one that comes to mind is The Giving Tree. Part of the reason I remember this book so well is because my 1st grade teacher gave me this book to take home. My mom read it to me all the time and when I could read it myself, I would read it to her. I want my kindergarten students to have a similar memory to this one. The spark I see in their eyes when my students pick up a new book gives me all the hope in the world that they will succeed. However, I want them to be able to keep that spark wherever they are, not just in school. We have a classroom library where students can check out books each week to read at home. Yet, with my small supply, it just isn't the same as being able to call something their own. By giving each of my 15 students their own, brand new book (in Spanish), I believe it will motivate them to read, care for books, and want to read even more books in the future.
