A flexible classroom is so important. I like to give my students lots of options of ways to learn (standing, sitting on the ground, working on clipboards in the library). This has proven to work so well with this group of kiddos, that I want to give them even more options. In the wake of this devastating event in our community, I think it is the perfect opportunity to turn my classroom into one where every person who enters instantly has a sense of calm and reassurance. Therefore, I am recreating my small groups area (now consisting of two tables pushed together, and 4 chairs) into an area where I can comfortably meet with students in small groups, or one to one. with so many of my students thrown off their normal routine- either having evacuees living with them, or having parents who have lost their jobs due to the fire, it is hard for many of them to focus on learning. The wobble seats and low table with cushions will allow them to choose the type of learning that will work best for THEM, as well as provide a sense of community- (not having specific "my desk" or "my area").
