I teach students from diverse backgrounds, many of which have a hard time obtaining instruments. We do our best to provide school owned instruments, but funding is limited. Charging the students large fees to be in band is not an option, and therefore, we are only able to bring in enough money to simply keep the band functioning, and are not able to buy any new equipment when needed. Despite these challenges, the band has been very successful for the past 10 years, earning superior ratings often.
