I am so lucky to teach 120 of the greatest freshmen on the planet! My students are witty, creative, energetic, and hardworking. This year, we are working hard to ensure that we are accomplished readers and authors who have published numerous essays and read over 1,000 books collectively. My students are at the magical age where they are constantly shaping and reshaping their identity as they find their unique voice within our school community, New Orleans, and our nation. Because we are an open-enrollment school, we serve students with very diverse strengths, challenges, and experiences. 9th grade English is a sacred space where students can use literature, research, discussion, and writing to grapple with complex issues in our community, nation, and world. In the process, they will also build a strong community of critical thinkers who will one day be the leaders of our school, city, and world.
