A goal of education has always been to prepare students for the world in which they live, but today we live in a world that is changing, developing, and becoming more diverse by the minute. This means that what we teach and what we read should be reflective of that and celebrate those diversities. I hope to provide my eighth-grade students with access to diverse literature for their self-selected reading with the purpose of instilling a mindset that every voice is worthy of being heard. I wholeheartedly believe educators have the power to change the world simply by passing on their passions for reading and learning. A good first step to that change is teaching students about the world - the diverse, 2017 world in which they live. I plan to use culturally diverse young adult literature and as windows into that world to create empathetic and open-minded global citizens who understand that opportunities are out there for everyone, no matter who you are or where you come from.
