By middle school, students have decided whether they like a subject or not. The students I will be working with have struggled, often for a long time, in the subject of math. They have continued to pass from grade to grade without developing a complete understanding of the subject. Their immediate response is to dislike math because they feel they are not good at it.
My goal is to help students be more successful in math by finding new ways to approach it. Using hands-on activities and games will develop a better understanding. Some of the supplies I have chosen allow students to work individually on specific skills (VersaTiles and Wrap-up Keys) or to work in a group (Factor Triangles). Dry-erase boards, wipe-off number mats and coordinate pegboards help students to be actively engaged. We will play Number Guess Who, plot points and create shapes. There are a number of math mazes that can be put inside dry-erase pockets for students to use again and again until they understand the process. They will have fun while working in order to find success where they have not previously.
Please help support my class so I can help support these students as they develop stronger math skills through various hands-on and engaging methods.
