I am a third grade reading teacher in the best city in the world, Washington, D.C. Savoy Elementary School is located in Southeast. It is a title 1 school that is 99% black with 100% free and reduced lunch. Despite being in a low socioeconomic area being one to two grade levels behind my students are eager to learn. This past year my students worked so hard by staying focused, trying their best, coming to school everyday and they even came on Saturdays. My students have consistently committed to succeeding despite their individual challenges. Some of those challenges included having to stay home and miss school to watch their younger siblings, coming to school hungry and not always having support at home. But, I'm so proud of them they kept going.
