If each AP Lang student can have a copy of the book The Things They Carried, we will have much more flexibility with outside reading assignments and analysis work. I've read the book recently, and it is very moving and informative about an often-overlooked population of soldiers in our American History. I think it's important to shed light on what life was like during and post-Vietnam War. And from a writing point-of-view, Tim O'Brien utilizes brilliant rhetorical strategies, use of syntax/diction/language, and a unique style that will open the minds of my writers to writing unlike anything they've ever read before. We will be doing close reading analysis of several of the chapters. Zooming out, we will use this novel as a launching pad for debate and persuasive argument. We will look at the assertion Tim O'Brien is making, especially in the chapter "How to Tell a True War Story."
