I teach in a low income neighborhood, where in most families, both parents work to make ends meet. A lot of my students (83% to be exact) are Hispanic, and come from a household which they speak a language other than English in the house. Due to the parents busy work schedule to provide for their families, a lot of times students are left at home to take care of siblings or figure out problems on their own. I have an amazing group of students, who I absolutely love and adore. I have the privilege to have lived in their neighborhood and go to their same school when I was their age, so I can relate to them. I want my students to talk knowledge from my classroom that they find useful, and important. I tell them at the beginning of the year, "my goal is not to make you love math as much as I do, although I wish I could. My goal is to help you enjoy it and make it just a little bit easier by the time you're done here."
