Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS) and Comprehensible Input (CI) are methods in foreign language teaching that have been proven to be most successful in second language acquisition. Several studies have been conducted over many years to support this method of instruction. One such study found that in order for language to be acquired, it must be comprehensible (Krashen & Terrell, 1983). Another one noted that reading has a profound positive effect on language development (Krashen, 1998, 2004; Rodrigo, 2009). The goal is for students is to read a wide variety of materials to develop language acquisition. They may start with short stories with limited vocabulary and storylines that are familiar to them and eventually grow to reading authentic texts in Spanish. They will sometimes read silently on their own and we will read stories aloud as a class. Students will also complete other activities such as writing alternative endings to the stories. This project will provide access to a wide variety of books in Spanish that will be interesting to our students and will help them acquire language fluency. The books will provide students with materials that are comprehensible to them as they grow in their skills. The authentic texts will help students explore cultural topics and help them see that the world is bigger than their small town and to become more globally competent individuals.
