I am a Clinician at Kingsman Academy Public Charter School, located in NE Washington, DC. Kingsman Academy is starting its third year as a public charter school, working to perfect a non-traditional learning model that focuses on individualized learning strategies for all of our students. Kingsman enrolls students in the 6th through 12th grades, focusing on those students who are at risk of dropping out, who are under-credited or over-aged, who have attendance problems or behavioral and emotional challenges. I work directly with students on their social emotional goals. This past year, we designed a Calm Down Corner in my classroom, as well as a Wall of Expression that the students filled with quotes and pictures. Kingsman lacks many therapeutic supplies. The Calm Down Corner was just that: a corner. With the proper supplies, the space would be better utilized and more effective for our student population.
