During the last few months of school, Kindergartners go through a rapid burst of growth as readers. Being first year teacher, I am still trying to build up my classroom resources to meet their diverse needs. These supplies will help them to become more confident independent readers, fluent readers, and support the ever critical need for children to learn to read for pleasure! The listening center in our classroom allows for all of my students (especially my English Language Learners) an enjoyable, low-risk way to independently hear stories read aloud by a fluent reader, while being able to follow along in their own book. My students are always motivated to finish their work in a timely manner to make it to the listening center. This tiny corner of our room provokes so much conversation after the book is over, and supports social-emotional development, and metacognition through the turn-taking, book selecting, and space sharing required during the read aloud. Earlier this year a parent so graciously donated the CD player to our classroom to replace our old broken listening center and my students were over the moon. I can't wait to see how happy they will be to have a new collection of books to listen to!
