A classroom is supposed to be a place for children to question, explore, and engage to develop new understandings of the world they live in. Students need to be actively involved in the learning process in order for a classroom to function in the way that it is supposed to. It becomes difficult for students to be actively involved when they are uncomfortable from sitting in a hard plastic chair all day. When students are allowed to choose different seating options or materials (stools, cushions, pillows, kick bands) not only do they feel more comfortable, but they are taking ownership of their learning and are more engaged in the classroom.
Allowing my students to have flexible seating options will help them stay engaged in their learning. Different types of seating allows for comfort and functionality in the classroom without distracting from the learning of other students. Students also learn about their personal needs and learning styles through being able to choose seating that best fits their needs. These flexible seating options will truly make an impact on how my students grow and learn over the course of the year.
