It is very difficult to buy low level, high-interest texts to meet the needs and interests of all of my learning disabled students with print disabilities. If students could have ready access to sites that have a book share feature then the students would be able to gain access to grade level text through the listening modality which is one of their strengths as learners. Instead of waiting for a peer to read grade level text to them or wait for the teacher to become available, the students would use the iPads to listen to the grade level text. They could start their assignments with no delay and be on par with their peers. Students who have print disabilities also will use the iPads to practice phonemic awareness skills through fun and engaging apps that are far from the "drill and kill" methods that are tedious and boring. As you can see, the IPads will allow the students to bypass the challenging task of reading and additionally supports learning grade level skills Students can also access apps the reinforces basic literacy skills, sight word development, and vocabulary development. Most of all, however, the students gain a boost in confidence as they can now keep up with their peers. They feel inspired to keep listening to the text where their focus is on the meaning of what they are reading rather than the task of decoding words.
