Last school year I had an "ah haa" moment that completely changed my teaching perspective and style. I had a class of 19 5 year olds. 18 of them were sitting quietly at their tables as they had been taught to do. 1 was laying on the floor near her table with her feet propped up on her chair. Honestly I was irritated, since I had asked her numerous times day after day to sit up in her chair, so I kindly but pointedly posed some questions directly to her about our lesson. To my absolute astonishment she knew exactly what our lesson was about and beautifully articulated her responses. Furthermore, she seemed focused, surprisingly engaged in the topic and most important, happy and comfortable. As I looked around at the other students leaning against the wall, rocking their chairs back on 2 legs or slumping and gazing out the window it hit me, my little wiggle worm wasn't zoning out; she was finding the best learning position and style for her needs and she was more focused and engaged than anyone else in the room. Providing wobble seats, cushions, bands and clip boards will allow my students to move around the room and work in a position and atmosphere that is most beneficial for their unique learning style. My goal is to create a learning environment that is student centered and promotes individuality so that my little learners reach their academic potential.
