Have you ever googled "children's books", "children reading", "children at the zoo", or anything similar to those examples? I bet each time majority of your results showed images of White children. Do you remember learning about US history in school and all of the movers and shakers in history? I bet the majority of them were White as well. Education for a long time has been White focused and White centered. I want to change this reality for my students. It is for this reason, that I am fighting for material that they can see themselves in. With literature that showcases students of color, my students will be able to better relate to the child in the novels and also know that reading is something for Black children.
