My students will use these materials during various parts of each day, including morning tubs time, math time, and center time. Every morning, students will be welcomed into the classroom and begin working with tubs filled with materials from this project. During this time, students will be using these materials to work with their hands and build their fine-motor skills. Fine-motor skills are crucial for kindergarteners, because they help with hand strength and coordination that makes writing less challenging. Beyond working on fine motor skills, students will use these materials to be creative and build as well, all while socializing with one another and building friendships and community. This time will allow students to get their brains warmed up and ready to go for a full day of learning! Using tangible objects helps students gain a better understanding of concepts, especially in math. That is why we will use materials like counters and shape blocks from this project during math time. Students will be able to use the counters and blocks to practice concepts we learn in kindergarten such as counting, adding, subtracting, and shape recognition. We will end each day with center time, a time where students can choose where they want to spend their time learning and socializing with their peers. During centers, these materials will be used by students at tables, in sensory tables like the sand and light table, and on the carpet. Students will be able to engage with the materials in their own creative ways, extending the possibilities of how they can be used further than imaginable! These materials will aid children in working together, practicing their social skills, and building friendships.
