I am requesting books and book sets to create a literacy rich environment that will allow each of my students to be actively engaged with text. Titles include A Chair for My Mother, A Day's Work, Fly Away Home, Growing Vegetable Soup, What Will the Weather Be? and A Place to Grow. My school does not have a reading basal series nor class sets of reading books. During whole group literacy instruction, students were viewing text on a document camera as I conducted a read aloud and modeled comprehension skills. Unfortunately, the students were only sharpening their listening skills because they were not afforded the opportunity to engage with the text. An addition of books and book sets will enhance the learning in our classroom in several ways. First, the texts contain information that can be used in the real world outside the classroom. For instance, my students can easily apply the information learned to plant herbs, vegetables, and flowers in our new outdoor school garden. My students can learn about produce grown by local farmers and produce imported from South America. Second, the content helps the students to relate their experiences and situations to the world. For example, in the text A Pen Pal For Max, students learn that children from other countries can experience pain and loss caused by natural disasters. Finally, the texts lend themselves to further exploration. By learning about an earthquake in Chile, South America students can study natural disasters in the United States. It could develop into a service-learning project to help victims of natural disasters. These selected texts will extend the learning beyond our classroom and help my students to make connections across the curriculum. The materials will provide meaningful ways for my students to learn and grow.
