Thanks to our pantry, we can continue to help meet those essential needs by sending home a weekly food bag containing 4–5 shelf-stable meals and snacks to identified families. Our school nurse also has access to the pantry and can provide snacks during the day to students who need something to get them through the long gap between breakfast and lunch.\r\n\r\nYour contribution allowed us to secure high-need items as well as items that are not typically donated—making an even greater impact. This project has allowed us to do just that. The shelving fits perfectly in the designated space for our pantry. We are using the storage containers to help us sort, organize and store the shelf stable food that started with the food from this project. We have added food from food drives from our school community, local churches and our neighboring high school. So far we have sent home 57 bags of food to families within our school. The reusable tote bags that were included in this project have been very beneficial to us. We are able to reuse these sturdy bags weekly. We added a bag tag to each bag asking for it to be returned for a refill, and that is happening. Most of the students that are receiving food bags are bus riders and the sturdy bags are very helpful as they navigate the bus and walk home from the bus stop. Our families are very appreciative of the help that our school is able to provide them with this project. Our plan is to continue this project for many years to come! We identified this as an area that would improve reading fluency and comprehension for our students. We invested, through a different Donors Choose project, in a program called Vocabulary Surge, that would provide daily lessons in morphology that would help our students build their vocabulary base through the study of affixes and Greek and Latin roots. Once beginning the program we realized that in order to incorporate the hands on piece of manipulating base and root words with prefixes and suffixes we needed a supply of card stock in order to make this program be successful. This project has allowed us to use the program with fidelity and see the growth in vocabulary that we were looking for with our students. Each lesson has them manipulate and create words based on the affix that we are studying. Without this card stock we would not be able to see students engaged and actively participating in each lesson. Having a variety of colors of card stock allows for us, as teachers, to easily monitor student work as we move about our classrooms while our students are working. The card stock also helps with durability since the cards are used with multiple lessons and on multiple days. We have just completed our midyear assessments that include a vocabulary component as well as fluency and comprehension. We are seeing growth in all areas.
