I teach a diverse group of second graders in Santa Clara County, California who come from a range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Many of our students are English learners (over 50%). A third of the students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. My students are very enthusiastic learners. They are curious and are eager to learn about all topics in science, especially animals. Unfortunately, my classroom library does not have enough books to meet the needs of my 26 students. Literacy is essential to student success. Nonfiction books will be a crucial tool in helping each and every student become a lifelong learner.
