I am particularly concerned about the scholars in my class. The scholars in this self-contained classroom are at a disadvantage when it comes to their daily reading block. Part of the reading block is independent reading. They are required not only to read independently, but also to increase their stamina from an average of reading only 1 - 3 minutes in one session. I am aiming for the scholars to increase their reading stamina up to at least 12 – 15 minutes in one session in preparation for state assessment tests and leisure reading. To help the scholars become successful, I want to incorporate high interest reading materials for the scholars who are two or more grades behind in their reading levels. The school does have regular level reading materials, but the girls are most of the time ashamed of the selection of materials that they are able to read. They believe that they are too old for the selected reading materials. Supplying my class with a library of high interest books will bring pleasure to the scholars and will motivate them to want to read at a higher reading level. I will make sure that the topics of these high interest books will be age appropriate and that the scholars will feel comfortable around peers their age. I hope Donors Choose can support my class of students with Specific Learning Disabilities. We recite this daily: “Our Class Creed” Read with Ease Enjoy the world of Print Advance our Imagination Data that will show our Growth
