As I step back into the elementary classroom after being away for 20 years and teaching primarily adult learners, I could not be more excited! However, I am starting over from scratch as far as supplies, children's books and other activity resources. We will use these items daily through the use of small group lessons, whole group learning activities and more in Reading, Math, Social Studies and Science; all while building our own sense of Community and acceptance of ourselves and each other. The books I am requesting focus on acceptance, diversity, perspective, encouraging others and loving yourself. From these books, I will teach the standards required using teaching strategies and methodologies such as interactive read aloud, shared reading and various writing activities. These all promote literacy while also building communication within my classroom. The resources such as the large writing tablets and bound blank books will be used for interactive and shared writing lessons and then independent writing as my students grow and build skills as readers and writers. Centers or "stations" are wonderful ways to bring in opportunities for creativity, group interactions and independent practice all in a fun, hands-on and developmentally appropriate way. The CD players and headphones, bingo games, pocket charts, puppets and more will all be used for those times. My first graders come with a set of fears and experiences that are unique to international families. Having these supplies available in my classroom will help create a more positive and safe area for them to share, learn how to be better readers and writers, develop higher level thinking in math and science, build relationships, and embrace the value of each person in the room.
