The goal of my project is to create a safe space for vulnerable students in crisis. Far too many of my students experience and witness trauma on a daily basis and we have no dedicated calming space currently in our school. This is problematic because my students with disabilities and LGBTQ students in particular experience depression and anxiety at alarming rates. Many have expressed suicidal thoughts. This project will help us build a "Breathe & Believe (in yourself) Zen Zone" to reduce barriers to learning by creating a safe space for students that helps kids in crisis learn to self-regulate big emotions like anger and sadness, and learn strategies to cope with anxiety. With your help, the Breathe & Believe (in yourself) Zen Zone will allow our school to use a trauma-informed approach to supporting students in crisis. This space will help calm bodies and calm minds by creating a calming atmosphere with plants and other visual elements. Students will be able to relax and refocus with flexible seating and multiple sensory elements like an aromatherapy diffuser, sound machine with calming sounds, and a sensory light projector. The hourglass timer, mindfulness game, noise cancelling headphones, and workbooks serve as sensory and deescalation tools to help students with stress management. The books in this project will help me build a resource library to help at-risk students develop long-term, self-management skills that will ultimately help them make room for more academic and social/emotional success in the classroom and beyond!
