Our class comes together on the rug many times throughout the day. We get together first things in the morning, sing songs, do the calendar, and tell each other something happening in our lives each day. Throughout the day, this is our meeting spot to start lessons, enjoy mini-lessons, explore our reading books and engage in discussion that leads to questions of a deeper understanding. This rug is also a place that allows students to get to know one another much more and learn how to learn from one another. So many of my students come from an impoverished home. When we come together on the rug, we don't feel the distinction. We all have a valuable part of the discussion that happens there. Students know our designated area is a safe space for learning where everyone's ideas count and should be heard. Having a new rug to replace our worn out , torn up foam mats would be even more inviting for my students. I believe having a more inviting spaces would encourage more engaging discussions and foster more student creativity.
