One of the most important parts of good teaching to me is incorporating literacy into my content area. It's easy to try and put literacy skills on backs of Language Arts teachers, but this should not be the case. Our students will need to be able to communicate more than any other generation before them, and it is up to all of us to make sure they can do so effectively and efficiently. Even though science content is what I teach, how I teach it is equally important. This where the book DNA Detectives comes in. This book would be an effective strategy to engage my students not only in a discussion about genetics and DNA, but also provide them opportunities to practice pre-reading, during reading, and post-reading strategies that are so important for their literacy education.
