So many of my students discovered excitement, critical thinking, and a love for literature they didn't know was possible when they read Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" last year. As a result, and at the request of many students, our small school is adding a Gothic Literature English course. I've been astounded at my students' drive to read more Gothic novels and stories to dig deeper into the themes and characters that so captivated them last year. As an English teacher, I was blown away when students came to me requesting an increase from the single Gothic novel in the course to 3, 4, and even more. They just wanted to keep reading. As the impetus for this was "Frankenstein," coupled with several short stories from Melville, Hawthorne, and Poe, I want to capitalize on this surge in desire to read by taking them deeper into the world of Gothic Literature. Adding the book Dracula will be a perfect addition for this new class.
