Students from the classroom will be actively involved in planning the space, tilling the soil, planting, and maintaining the garden. Given the challenge of creating green space in this modern city, this project will teach students how to beautify surroundings with minimal space, decrease CO2 into the environment, decrease noise pollution, etc. Plant choice will be vital for sustenance in a concrete environment and will teach students about the valuable role that plants play in our lives. These plants will be crucial in helping Living Environment, AP Environmental Science, and AP Biology classes teach the functions and developmental stages of different plants. Additionally, in Regents and AP Physics classrooms, emphasis will be placed on how flowers may be able to manipulate the laws of physics, by playing with light, using mechanical tricks, and harnessing electrostatic forces to attract pollinators. We will be purchasing a wide range of perennial plants: boxwoods, lilies, daisies, geraniums, shrubs, roses, and daylilies. We will also be purchasing soil, mulch, potting mix, and rocks to provide a strong foundation for plant growth. Selected students and staff will monitor water, light, and soil conditions for the plants. I am very excited to represent students who want to see a change in their school environment. We hope to bring back the garden as it was intended to look!
