Board games are powerful English-building and community-building tools for my newcomer students! While playing games, students from varying countries are intrinsically motivated to use English. The team-working skills they hone and the relationships they build playing games together, translates directly to classroom group work, a cornerstone of building English Fluency. Board games challenge students to read English directions, negotiate meaning, and problem solve as a team. Once they know how to play a game, the repetitive language makes English feel less intimidating and even shy students are motivated to participate and speak in English. Additionally, students that wouldn't normally interact, get a structured environment to do so! My Arabic-speaking students and my Spanish-speaking students are talking and problem-solving! Importantly, these middle schoolers crave autonomy! At this age they are sick and tired of adults leading the way! Games allow them this freedom in a structured way that carves a path to English practice, team building, and the honing of their critical-thinking skills! It's a win-win-win-win!
