My students live in a remarkably segregated community. Our school is made up almost entirely of students from the same background and socio-economic status. Because their families live in poverty, many do not have significant exposure outside their own community. The good news, however, is that great stories have the power to take us outside our life experience and see a bigger possibility for the world. I am working to fill my classroom with books that will inspire and challenge my students to understand difference and to treat all people with kindness and dignity. By providing exposure to stories in which characters meet challenges with creativity and resourcefulness, students will be empowered to face their own challenges and imagine positive ways of living into those challenges. This project also includes materials to organize my classroom for a Readers Workshop model of building literacy. This model offers students the opportunity to choose their reading materials and follow their passion, while offering broad exposure to a variety of books. Because the majority of my students are reading below their grade, it is especially important that they have access to high interest and accessible books so that they will be able to read the number of hours a day that they need to read to gain the skills that will allow them to succeed academically. I am personally grateful for all the amazing books that shaped me into a reader as a child, for the stacks of reading that helped me see myself as strong, capable and brave. I hope for each of my students to make that same connection with the written word, and I am grateful for your help in making that connection a reality.
