Teaching children tolerance can be a large, sometimes difficult task to face. This project will allow me to give my students a small glimpse of what this huge world has to offer. Through these books my students will be able to travel around the world as they learn that although people may look, talk, or act different, each person has something unique to offer. In his book "Let's Talk About Race," Julius Lester teaches students that each person has a story to tell and only when we begin to open up and share these stories will we realize that we actually have a lot more in common than we think. This concept is further illustrated in the book "Same, Same But Different" when two pen pals who live half a world away become best friends. The large carpet will be a great place for my students to gather in a relaxed setting as we read these stories and discuss the authors' messages. I hope that this will be a place where my students can begin to open up and tell their own stories so that we can not only understand diversity, but begin to celebrate it!
