In my classroom, all of my students struggle with speaking and understanding. It is important for my room to have the necessary tools to promote speaking and understanding for my students. I am requesting items such as play dough and tools to work on nouns and verbs that we use every day (i.e. want, make, build, roll, press, push, etc). The animals, farm, community helpers and sand all promote language skills such as labeling things they see in the community. My students are motivated by hands on activities, and crafts. Keeping pre-school aged children engaged is the key to helping them best learn. My goal is to use these items to help my students effectively communicate their wants, needs and ideas. Many of my pre-school students come to my school solely to receive speech therapy. This may be the only chance they have during the week to engage with other same aged children or to be introduced to new vocabulary outside of their daily routine. These language skills are not optional for success, but required, in order to effectively communicate their wants and needs. The pre-school aged students that receive speech and language services will be enrolling into a kindergarten classroom within a year of services. These items will help increase their language and communication skills to prepare them for a general education classroom where academics are key! By providing them a foundation of increased vocabulary, articulation, life skills, and communication they are being set up for success in kindergarten.
