Our students come from low income and urban backgrounds and often don't have the opportunity or space for hands on work in gardens. Our district suffered major cutbacks this year and there is no longer money for large lab equipment. In the past these projects have been on counter tops with whatever materials could be found. Students used plastic bags to grow seeds or whatever other supplies they could have. The lack of proper lab equipment has affected the results of these experiments. This plant growth cart will allow our students the opportunity to create their own labs, understand the scientific method, practice scientific writing, and get real world experience in horticulture. Urban gardens are becoming more prevalent and becoming more important in the farm to table movement, these new skills could lead them to new job opportunities!
