These materials will allow students to explore the elements of art through creating a still life of common objects with watercolors, ink, and pastels. Students will be able to create an impressive and fun piece of art while they learn how the properties of watercolor paint, pastels, and ink are used. The simplicity and openness of this lesson allows students to spend more time focusing on adding their own creativity and encourages each student to create their own unique piece. Students will first draw the still life model. Next, students will wet the paper and trace their drawing with ink observing how the ink moves and spreads as it interacts with the water. Afterwards, students will paint their image in either a cool or warm color scheme. Finally students will use chalk pastels to add highlights and create depth. This lesson reinforces the students understanding of the basic elements of art including line, color, space, while while allowing them to interact with new media. Some art will be on display in the school. Eventually all art will go home with students to share with families and friends.
