If there is one thing I've learned in my short time of teaching, it's that school is an ever changing place. I look back to when I was in elementary school with all the textbooks, worksheets, overhead projectors, and mini whiteboards we used to show the teacher answers, and I realize that school has already changed so much. We now have projectors in every classroom to show a variety of content including videos, pictures, articles, timers, etc. We also have document cameras that allow us to work alongside our students on a worksheet that projects onto the screen in real time. And now the new normal we are starting to see is to have a 1 to 1 ratio of students to Chromebooks (chromebook being the type of laptop we use). We have been working hard over the past couple years to have a Chromebook for each student in 6th grade. So far we have enough Chromebooks for three out of the four classes. We are hoping this year we can reach our goal of four out of the four classes having a Chromebook for each student. Chromebooks help us to have a much more interactive learning environment. A few examples include allowing students to be able to conduct research projects in Science, virtual tours of places around the world for Social Studies, self-paced math assignments that help teach the students at a pace that works for them, and for typing up paper in language arts. Chromebooks open up a world of opportunities for us teachers that we hope to be able to have in all four classes!
