I work in a portable at my elementary school and the walls are definitely in need of an update! They are uninspiring, dark, and outdated, and it only appears darker during the Winters in Oregon. The attached picture was taken on a sunny, Fall day in September, but that isn't necessarily apparent because of the dark wood paneling. Not only are all four portables adorned in that paneling, but my particular portable had been the storage room at my school for over a decade. I offered to the district to supply paint and labor, but was declined. Removable wallpaper is my only option, as no permanent changes are allowed. The portable needs some love and the students deserve a classroom that is bright and clean! I am a firm believer that the environment that students work in has a significant impact on their learning. I want the students to be happy and excited to enter their classroom every morning. I want it to feel warm, comforting, and like their home away from home, because it is their home away from home for the nine months we spend in it together! If students are inspired by their working environment, then positive attitudes and other important traits will shine through.
