The supplies will make it possible for my students to spread random acts of kindness by participating in the Kindness Rock Project. The Kindness Rock Project says "that one kind message at the right moment can change someone’s day, their outlook, and their whole life." Students paint and decorate smooth rocks with positive messages. The rocks are left in our courtyard garden for someone else to find the message that has meaning for them. A positive message can make your day. This small act of sharing gratitude, affirmations, encouragement, and offers of hope can have a big impact. Part of the process includes students exploring and gathering kind thoughts. This makes students aware of their own needs (self advocacy) and the needs of others (empathy). Decorating a rock with a uplifting positive message can inspire the creator and the receiver. I did this activity with a small group of 15 students before I ran out of the supplies that I had purchased myself. I want to reach a significantly larger amount of the student body and need more supplies. One student from my initial group commented " People deal with a lot of things on a daily basis. Kindness rocks give a special message to keep you going." She painted a kindness rock for some unknown person and simultaneously found a rock made by someone else that said "breathe" which she said spoke to her because of her anxiety.
