Students will be learning life lessons about healthy food choices. We are growing produce on a hydroponic tower garden and have been sampling the foods we grow, so it would be wonderful to give them real life examples of how to prepare these items for meals or snacks. Then they could know how to make healthy foods at home. Students will gain the confidence to try new things and prepare foods they might other wise skip because it is easier to microwave ready-to-eat processed foods. Our school is part of the nationally recognized CATCH program (coordinated approach to children's health) where students learn more about making healthy choices when eating and moving. This project would help emphasize what we are leaning about the importance of a healthy lifestyle. We would like a blender to make smoothies from the greens and a hot plate to cook different produce from the garden. Kitchen utensils, such as bowls, knives, pans, and storage containers are needed to help us prepare food. Food service items such as disposable gloves, aprons, and also important. This will help them see how they can use the types of food we grow here at school at home too!
