The wall size mirrors will be mounted on the wall of the hula classroom so that students can watch themselves dance, and learn the steps that are steeped in tradition. The kumu (teacher) would stand in front of the mirrors and the students can see what the kumu is doing and imitate what the kumu is doing. The mats will be placed on the floor so the keiki can sit comfortably while learning the hand movements, and then they will be able to stand and dance on these mats, which are similar to the feel of the outside ground and grass, which is how a traditional dance would take place.
