At no point can I ever produce or reproduce the type of engagement that my students can get from a computer program. With computer programs they do what they want to do, they get at-bat, they get every turn, and they don’t have to wait. They are in control. Society is changing, everybody’s looking at a screen, all the time. There is one of two ways to go in education, we can embrace it or we can fight against it. I’m all for embracing it, to be honest.
Our kids are using smartphones by the time they are 1 or 2 years old. We should start embracing that instead of condemning it. I am not saying we should not still be traditional, obviously, they need to learn how to read and write. We still have to do pencil & paper tasks as well as teach social skills. We need to embrace the fact that our society is changing and we are not preparing our kids for the same types of jobs that even were being prepared for when we were in school. Things are changing; things are going to be more automated. We’re going to need more computer programmers and app writers. We’re going to need people that know how to code. We have to start thinking about this. I want my students to be computer literate.
Your donation will not only benefit my current students, but all the students that I will be fortunate enough to teach in the future as well. Access to iPads in our classroom will help create an engaging atmosphere that students crave to visit every day. I want my classroom to be a sanctuary for my students and the incorporation of technology will help achieve this.
